There are some simple tests to determine whether or not you have an addiction, and they can be found in a variety of places (some of which I’ve listed below). But in brief, you need to ask yourself the following questions:
- Have you ever thought you should cut back on the behavior in question?
- Has this behavior of yours harmed or hurt others?
- Have you attempted to cease this behavior, but find that you are right back at it again?
- Have you ever wished that the uncontrollable urge to engage in this behavior be taken from you?
If you answered “yes” to these questions, then there is a good chance that you are, indeed, an addict. But make no mistake: you do not have to stay the way you are. There is hope for change. And a new life.
The first step can be a hard one, however. You first have to acknowledge that you are powerless to stop the behavior (the addiction). Are you ready to admit that?
